Public Wedding Proposals: The Agony & The Ecstasy

Behind door #1 we have Ian Johnson, who after scoring the winning touchdown in overtime of one of the greatest college football games every played, proposes to his girlfriend, the head cheerleader for his own Boise State Broncos, thereby putting the icing on quite probably the most memorable, if not simply the greatest, day of his life:

Behind door #2 we have this guy (indubitably happy we don't know his name) who proposes after his girlfriend wins an arena contest for tickets to a Wizards game. It doesn't go nearly as swimmingly, Extreme Cringe Action here:

Gotta love the announcer punctuating things with a morbid "ooh."

So while asking your lady to marry you in front of a stadium of people may sound romantic, it's clearly not a no-brainer, press your luck accordingly fellas. You definitely might want to slip in the 'ol "so, I had this crazy dream the other day, where I proposed to you in front of tens of thousands of people. I woke up before you responded though, so I was wondering, even though it was just a dream, how do you think you'd respond to such a scenario?" over dinner.

  1. I didn't read the post or click the links. Did you just propose to me? I accept.

TAN, I thought you and I were getting married?!!? You were going to surprise me on the blog, no?

GAAAHHH!!! A public marriage proposal would be the surest way to never see me again. I think I'd rather find out a guy wants to dump me via scoreboard.

TAN, it appears that you have fallen victim again to a hoax when posting a video. The Wizard game proposal was actually staged by the team's promotional department to "entertain" the fans.

It must be 2007 if a (albeit light-skinned) black kid can propose to a white head cheerleader on national TV.

I would love to see the set switch-off numbers in Oklahoma for that moment. Talk about insult to injury.

  8. mist - ok, but I ain't no punk, so excuse me while I holla "we want prenups!"

choatey - well wouldn't want you to run out on me like the guy behind tube #2, but the bed's big enough for three, and i'm sure mist will make room.

mist - right? (and thanks for the nomination, i didn't know that was going on.)

    anon1 - what's the problem?

anon2 - no way, that's some oscar winning acting if that's the case. looks pretty real.

anon3 - interracial is all the rage, even in the OK maybe.

christy - maybe. it definitely could have been shyness and stage fright. either way, looked bad.

  10. anon - wow. good work, and thanks. that's fairly stunning. I like the bit about the reveal being drowned out by the crowd booing the woman.

  11. I'd hate a public proposal, cos then my husband would find out!

I just couldn't bear to watch the Boise State player propose to the cheerleader again...It brings back memories of a lateral, a fake pass, and some other goof-ball play that won the game for them. I am a Sooner fan and I'm still sitting in front of the TV in disbelief...well, I'm sitting close to the TV, because my computer is in another room.

    OH! That poor guy -

I always wonder about guys who do these "sneak" proposals and imagine that they are probably really some stalker whose been after the poor girl. That's why she ran - "ACK, it's him, again!"

    (came over via Mist)

  15. "Just a dream?" What a cop-out. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Just make sure there's no feedback on the P.A. That's a deal breaker.

  16. Good. That's why men shouldn't propose in public like that. Too much pressure. They think for sure that the woman will say yes, that there is no way they would humiliate them in public by saying no. But let that be a lesson to all the unoriginal men out there. Isn't the sports arena/basketball game proposal a bit played out anyway?
